Music Video Of The Week
Evening all! Today I bring you a Music Video from J Cole. He has various videos that could make it. However, i chose to talk about "Wet Dreamz".
The whole Music Video is a work of art, from the music down to the visuals; Cole manages to use his story telling style to take us back to his childhood when he first lost his virginity. Every lyric in the song is informative and the visuals add a vivid description of the information.
The most prominent thing about the video is the usage of puppies. Some may think its weird, However, the puppies symbolises "puppy love", a feeling felt by young people during childhood and adolescence.
Cole's lyrics were honest and so I would imagine the director just had to find a way to visually tell those lyrics without being too forward and without dismissing the romance aspects. Puppies are cute and watching them playing and getting closer whilst hearing sexual lyrics is easier to watch than humans doing the same. Hats off to the director on that one!
The use of slow motion took the video to another level. In every day life, we see everything at normal speed. When you think back to a past relationship, you can barely remember everything; yet you were together for so long. When you experience something, it happens so fast you can only reminisce a glimpse. Slow motion has always been the tool that generally makes you focus on the scene, it captivates you for however long it needs to and releases you back again. To captivate audiences in this story, all the puppies actions were made clear through the use of slow motion, from the wink, to the slip to the sudden wake up. This allows us the audience to really be taken in and feel attached to the story.
Colours were used wisely, colour is another aspect of videos that can really change your perception and draw out the brain activity needed to feel attached. The introduction of subtle and vibrant warm colours as the story (romance) progressed gave a greater emphasis.
Hope you enjoyed the blog post! if you feel we can do better with our blogs, maybe cut it shorter, more in-depth, or a new subject etc, let us know!
