Twin Atlantic - Make A Beast Of Myself

Make a Beast Of Myself is a clever music video that plays with Slow Motion, highly coordinated and planned acting as well as a good message and story that interlink with the song.

Me and a friend were discussing 'One-Shot' music videos and how they can be a lot easier and quicker to film. However after we talked more in detail about it, we began to realise the amount of planning and behind the scenes work that a 'One-Shot' film needs is pretty huge. You might not spend as much time rolling but I'm pretty sure the preparation for it takes a lot longer than normal. 'Make A Beast of Myself' is no exception to the planning and execution of a fantastically delivered 'One-Shot' music video. My friend showed me this music video and I was taken aback instantly amount of smoothness of it.

The music video relates to the song down to the reaction of the people around the lead. People reacting in a chaotic manner to the lead simply walking down the street suggests to me that they see something we don't.

The camera work is fairly simple. A Steadycam or Gimble was probably used and for 90% of the music video its simply a wide tracking shot of the lead singer walking up one side of a street and down the other. The difficult bit would be to know what to capture at what moment while all the actors are running in on different cues. (Again, lots and lots of preparation).

The lighting is simple. They've used daylight to light the whole scene, maybe with some clever flags and diffusion out of shot to keep it the same the whole way round. If you have too many working cogs in a machine, things go wrong easier and quicker. Keeping the lighting and camera simple, and having a huge orchestrated scene works. The time and planning has gone into the scene which is what I like. This music video has inspired me work towards creating my own version with an upcoming artist. (By the way, there is a hidden cut in the music video. Hope you saw it too.)

The colouring is simple again. The warmth and setting makes me think of the location being in a Spanish or french Town in the summer.

In summary, it isn't a song I would have on my iTunes, however the music video is clever and different to a lot of 'One-Shot' music videos I've seen. The ending is different also, as it seems to begin to repeat itself all over again. I'd rate it 8/10 for execution and performance.
