Music Video Of The Week
Hello!
Today I bring you a review of ScHoolBoy Q - JoHn Muir music video, this video is one that keeps your attention throughout! The track "John Muir" is named after the middle school that Q attended. He talks about how he had a gun at 13 and dealing dope at 14. #Bellinthroughthestreets
John Muir is no ordinary music video, the entire video is shot from the side angle of a Coupe Deville; a car bought by Q with the money he made from hustling. The car becomes the main medium of the story, we are shown the life of two gangsters via it. The main camera technique used is very effective, it objectifies the car's whole journey. Many gangsters are typically seen in cars like the Coupe Deville, therefore it's used as a tool to convey their day to day activities. Editing is very well paced, every cut felt just right.
A majority of the shots were at night time and this gave a very dark and grungy tone to the music video as a whole. Overall, I think the music video is well done, the lyrics are very dark when dissected and i would imagine big fans of Q would really get a vivid representation when listening to every lyric. The director managed to tell a story of how the life of gangsters really are but did it in a way that is visually pleasing, one that would keep the viewer engaged to the very end.
